Brisbane, Australia: Best City?

March 24th 2008 05:13
A few of my fellow travellers and myself were discussing what is Australia's best city. Without hesitation, I chose Brisbane.

I guess what came out of it was that each city and each town means something different to each person. Each city and town has it's own culture and personality, that suits the personalities of the people who live there.

I like Brisbane best (even though I have a certain fondness for quite a lot of other places as well). The climate suited me. Not too hot and not too cold - just a nice temperate climate.

The atmosphere also appealed to me. Brisbane is like a big country town. As recently as the 70's, I can remember most of the arterial roads were still unsealed dirt roads.

I particularly liked the galleries at Paddington and New Farm, and found inspiration for writing by walking through the city streets to the solitude of the Botanical Gardens on the Brisbane River. Or a quiet afternoon reading on South Bank, before swimming in the only sand beach in any capital city CBD in Australia (again, South Bank).

The people appealed to me. There is a wide diversity of different lifestyles there. There are the long term locals, and a seemingly never ending stream of new faces. About 1,500 new people move to Brisbane every week, from all over Australia and the world. This is the largest movement into any city in Australia, so I argue that a lot of people support me in thinking that Brisbane is the place to be.

Oh, by the way, Jetstar and Virgin Blue have the cheapest flights to Brisbane from most capital cities, if you’re thinking of moving there.

Of course, the others in the party had their own views as to why other cities were the best, and all had merit that I had to agree with. Still, I think it is a personal matter when choosing one place above others.

It is interesting to see what towns or cities others prefer, and why.
